Pancake Day Blues
Just a wee bit blue today.
Thinking about all the years of rushed after-school pancake-ing.
A mad dash to the corner shop for overpriced jif lemon after ransacking the kitchen cupboards and finding none.
Scattered sugar around the plates on the kitchen table.
Excited chatter and giggles as dad tries to somersault crepes in the air without having burnt or stuck batter on pan, ceiling or floor.
When teenagers tumble into the house, after school bags and ties flying - shoes in a messy pile - eating everything put onto plates with shouts and giggles and shoulder-thumps.
Then just as suddenly the house is quiet.
No little people here for pancakes. No medium-sized people. Just the two of us.
And this year my kid-zone is empty-hearted and pancake-less.
But I do have many, many happy memories.
