Shopping to Save Money

I'm recovering from a chest infection at present, and can't keep on one task for long before falling asleep.. it's been a PJ-and-Sofa fortnight!

So, over the last three days I've tried to plan and cost our month's shop for February.  This would usually take me a couple of hours; from planning meals to completing the online shop.

Last year I kept our monthly supermarket shop down to £150, and I was interested to see how well we could eat while attempting to stick around the same budget.

(Our supermarket shop doesn't include fruit, veg. and eggs, which is delivered weekly from a local farm shop.)

These are the meals we have chosen for the month: *

Homemade fishcakes

Homemade Veg Meatballs

Mushroom stroganoff

Stir-fry

Chilli

Pan-fried Salmon

Mediterranean baked veg with a goats cheese sauce

Roast meal **

Spinach and Mushroom Quiche

Mushroom Risotto

ADB ***

Sea Bass

Sausage Casserole

Lord Woolton Pie

Pesto Pasta

Thai Green Curry

Spaghetti Bolognese

Cheese and Onion Pasty

* These are our main meals, some are repeated.

** We make a roast meal every Sunday for either us or us+family.  We eat fish and eggs but not meat: they eat meat.  Most weeks I make a veg roast or cook toad-in-the-hole with veggy sausages.

*** This stands for All Day Breakfast - our version is: scrambled egg, cooked mushrooms and tomatoes, veg sausages, baked beans, toast.

It is really important to eat well/be healthy.

All our meals are homemade.

I cut out salt and excess oil.

Having a varied diet is important to us.

Our breakfasts are cheap and easy - oats and chia seeds with fresh fruit.

We are able to afford this menu by being frugal everywhere.

  1. That's a really lovely selection of meals. I would be more than happy if I went to a restaurant and found those on the menu! We don't eat out (even on special occasions) but all 3 of us enjoy a wide range of foods and are happy to take the time to cook and experiment. It is one of the great pleasures of life and, like you, we would rather cut elsewhere than deprive ourselves of tasty, nutritious meals.
