Taking that first step

Two years ago I got ill. Really ill.

And we suddenly had a rather massive wake-up call.
Because I couldn't work, the money coming into our household was suddenly cut drastically.

We acted quickly - put the house up for sale, and started to sort out everything.
I discovered Gumtree and the car booty set, and became a dab hand at eBay selling.

I also took myself back mentally to the early years with GD, as a single mum managing on a tiny income.

Far from the hideous time we were expecting, it became a great adventure - and it felt more natural.
We discovered living below our means, and found we really rather liked it.

One of the hardest things for me - aside from adapting to living differently - was how we were suddenly treated differently by people we thought were friends.
These included a teacher, a specialist nurse, and a fairly famous blogger.  Whether they couldn't accept the change in our status or my new disability I will never know.
But it's their loss, and I have made true friends - including folk met through this blog and the previous one I wrote.

But the title of this post is 'Taking the first step'.
And it was a huge one for me.
One I want to share with you.

Because I found somewhere I felt comfortable fitting in, and last week I started working a few hours a week in My New Job.

  2. Oh wow, a new job, how fantastic!

I'm going to let you into a secret, because I like you, one of my aims for 2017 is to get to a point where I could have a job of some kind.

I know just what you mean about the friends too. Partly to save money we moved, many years ago, from a popular tourist place, the type of city people go for a weekend away, to a not very glam place. Not so many people were interested in staying!

  7. Good for you, and you have a friend in me if you'll accept me. I was diagnosed with MS about 18 years ago, and had to give up my very high powered and adored job, and since then as years go by I can no longer do things I always took for granted. Thank goodness most days I can do y embroidery and crazy quilting, otherwise I don't know how I'd cope. I too have had people that I counted as old and treasured friends drop away and lose contact because I can no longer join in the
activities that we used to share. It's sad, but life goes on, and I will never give in to despair. Blessings

  8. That is wonderful news Tracey! I hope you really enjoy working at your new job.
If someone likes you for your lifestyle and not for yourself they are really not worth knowing.
I hope 2017 is a wonderful year for you and your family.

  11. Many congratulations Tracey. I'm really intrigued as to your new job now.
I went through a huge life change quite a few years ago, very difficult, but the one thing I do know now is who my true friends are, and that is a precious thing.
Blessings for the New Year to you and yours. X

  13. Fantastic news and thank you for sharing with your readers. I'm so glad I found your blog again and enjoy reading about your family. I decided that 2016was the year I was going to shed "friends" who used me and dropped me even if I had known them gor 50 years-it's been liberating and I described it to a newish friend and she agreed that the others were not worthy of my friendship. I'm going to do your penny pot this year and start on 1st January 2017 and also going to revord my walking in order to get fitter. Catriona
